APPROACH AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Ferrero is committed to sourcing palm oil that is 100% RSPO certified segregated and traceable back to plantations, guided by an ambition to transform the industry to benefit people and the planet.

For Ferrero, this means working with trusted suppliers to improve practices and implement innovative solutions from the ground up. For example, using Starling satellite technology to monitor deforestation over 1.3 million hectares, covering 99.7% of the land we source from. In 2013, we launched our industry-leading Palm Oil Charter which, alongside our Supplier Code, helps track progress, increase transparency, and tackle deforestation and social issues across our supply chain.

Roadblocks and solutions

There are many complex issues facing the palm oil industry, from the impact on ecosystems, people and livelihoods, to a lack of awareness around Sustainable Palm Oil (SPO). At Ferrero, we are focused on tackling these issues throughout our supply chain. For example, preventing deforestation and increasing traceability using Starling satellite technology, and researching and promoting regenerative farming practices. We are also helping strengthen human rights due diligence through our work with Earthworm Foundation in Malaysia and Guatemala and on-the-ground supplier engagement. Beyond this, we are driving SPO awareness globally via research, consumer education, and partnerships with organisations like Chester Zoo (UK).

Action Plan for the next 5 years

  • Our focus is on increasing sustainability throughout our supply chain, including advancing our Labour Transformation Program with a focus on ethical recruitment and improved working conditions.
  • Collaboration is another key focus, particularly helping smallholders achieve certification and compliance with upcoming legislation.
  • Assessing and reducing our carbon footprint is a priority, as well tackling deforestation via satellite monitoring and scaling up our ‘Nature-Based Solutions’ project to support regenerative agriculture.
    • We remain committed to sourcing 100% RSPO-certified segregated palm oil – traceable back to plantations – for our historical brands, and to continuing to work with our acquired brands to increase traceability and ensure progress on complex issues in line with our commitments.
